Lip Colour Pairings And My Favourite Holiday Dresses

Anyone who knows me well enough will tell you I’m a Christmas fiend. Is it legal to even use those two words in the same sentence? It’s just that I love everything about the season. The reflection and the busyness, going to church and heading out the door to a party, the cooking, the cleaning and baking and then all the quiet time spent with the people I care most about.

The season also calls for me to pull out some of my favourite dresses.

You know, the ones I save for just this time of year only to find new ways of making them seem fresh. That’s the important part, because with all my holiday gifting, I don’t have a lot of cash left to buy anything new.  An easy solution is to pull out my old favourites from my closet and reinvent them with bold jewelry and new makeup. By far the easiest accessory you can have is a bold lip.  Plus, it’s the cheapest way to look expensive.

Typically, I am attracted to bright lips that contrast with whatever I’m wearing but my makeup artist for this shoot, Melissa Deane, persuaded me to try the matte lip trend that’s happening right now in one of the editorials. “Not everything has to be bright,” she said.” After you see look number two, you may agree.

I know there is a wide variety of lipsticks out there for the holidays, but I hope that these colour combinations can inspire you to try something new. You can use this as your cheat sheet when getting glammed up for your festivities.  So let’s get started, here are my 3 favourite holiday lip color pairings

Look 1.

I felt like a child in Disneyland when I saw this BCBGMaxAzria dress in New York City at 50% off. That was over 8 years ago and every Christmas since then, I’ve  put it on to attend some end of year get together.  It is an amazing sparkle to it and since  you are supposed to keep your jewelry simple when wearing a dress like this, I did just that. To my simple, silver hoop earrings I found at the Gallery, I added my  red Stuart Weitzman shoes, a vintage bag and this Revlon HD lipstick, Gladiolus, from its Colourburst line. The look is timeless. Don’t forget when doing your lip with a bold red colour you can add a gloss for a finishing touch.

Your cheat sheet: Try a bold red lip like this one from Revlon if you are going for a glamorous and sexy holiday look.  It looks best against black or blue or for a monochromatic look, pair it with a red dress.

Look 2.

This combination is one of my favorites because it’s very seductive and mysterious.  I hardly recognised myself in this beautiful Andrea De Silva photograph, for one I never do a nude lip and I never go this dark with my base. But again that’s the genius of Melissa. She chose a neutral shade by LunaMar and added a gold shimmer powder to top it off. My cheeks are perfectly contoured and then highlighted with gold shimmer. Melissa’s technique works because it picks up the colours   of the flowers in  the Claudia Pegus dress that I’ve had for 12 years.

Your cheat sheet: If you don’t suffer with dry lips, try a matte lipstick. This nude lipstick can make your face look glowing and luxurious. Especially if you add a gold shimmer to the cheekbones.

Look 3

This is one of my favourite holiday dresses. There are two standout details that make it perfect for the season: a hand beaded, plunging neckline and a floaty, ethereal bottom. Since the baby blue lends itself easily to a bold colour like this HD lip lacquer,Tourmaline, from Revlon. I love the moistness of this hot pink colour and the fact that it does not feel clammy is a huge plus.

Your cheat sheet: When pairing these colours together, makeup artist Melissa Deane told me that that a smoky eye works best with a hint of shimmer on the cheeks.

There you have it, my favorite 3 holiday lip color pairings! Which one is your favorite? Let me know in the comments below!
