There’s no easier, more affordable way to get glamourous, innovative, and exciting looks than with Revlon.

Growing up without the internet had its benefits – our conversations were richer, we actually exchanged birthday gifts rather than emojis, and there was no need to worry about the cringeworthy Facebook statuses of our children.

But growing up without the internet also meant that our access to information was limited and, oftentimes, wrong. Nowhere was that more superficially obvious than in the way we handled our makeup routine. Yes, turns out that’s a thing, according to a myriad of the most popular YouTubers.

With no Youtube and Instagram to guide us, we had to rely on our own flawed intuition to figure out how to make use of the jars we stored on our chest of drawers. Yes, there were some successes, but there were also a lot of failures (overdrawn eyebrows, garish purple eyeshadow, raccoon eyes, clumpy and stumpy eyelashes, and spotty foundation, to name a few).

To help rectify years of mistakes, we asked Revlon to help us come up with simple tips and tricks to perfect our eyes, skin, and overall makeup game.

Read on ahead to learn the proper technique for filling in your brows, what brow theory is, why it’s important to use two shades of foundation, how to get maximum wear from your eyeshadow, how to prep your skin, and much more!

HOW TO PROPERLY FILL IN YOUR BROWS

makeup

  • Pick a pencil one shade lighter than your natural hair, and use a feathering technique

  • Mimic your natural growth, and use light, short strokes to fill in your brows

  • Use brow theory to determine how your brow should look

  • Align your brow pencil vertically with the edge of your nose and lip to determine where your brow should begin

  • Next, slightly tilt your pencil so that it’s in line with the side of your nose and the outer rim of your iris

  • This is the highest point of your brow – the arch

  • Finally, align your pencil with the outer side of your eye to determine where the brow should taper of

HOW TO GET MAXIMUM STAY FROM YOUR EYESHADOW

makeup

  • Use a cream eyeshadow as a primer all over the lid

  • Set your base eyeshadow into the wet primer to increase its staying power

  • Blend out your eyeshadow into your crease to soften it out

  • Add a touch of highlighter to the brow bone to open up your eyes

  • Celebrate your laugh lines, but go light around the eyes if you want to draw focus away from them

HOW TO PROPERLY APPLY EYELINER

  • When putting on eyeliner, do not tug at your eyes

  • Instead, place a finger right under your water line and press lightly into the skin

  • The waterline will pop up automatically, and you can apply your eyeliner hassle-free

  • If you have hooded lids, try using a coloured eyeliner (instead of the traditional black) on your waterline instead

HOW TO PUT ON FALSE EYELASHES

makeup

  • Do not apply lash glue directly onto the eyelash band

  • Instead, place a small dab of glue onto your hand first

  • Then, using a tweezer, run a thin line along the lash band

  • Fan your lashes before placing them onto your eyelid

  • Make sure to stay as close to the lash line as possible

  • Apply a final coat of mascara to blend your natural lashes into your falsies

  • Tuck the band of the eyelashes into the small gap between your lid and natural eyelashes

HOW TO PREP YOUR SKIN

makeup

  • Use a primer to prep your skin before you put on foundation

  • A primer acts as a protective barrier, fills in laugh lines, and minimises the appearance of pores

HOW TO PICK YOUR FOUNDATION

  • Use two shades of foundation (not one) to accurately match the colour of your face

  • Use a lighter shade to highlight areas you want to bring forward and pull focus towards, like your t-zone, cheeks, and chin

  • Use a darker shade towards the sides of your face, jawline, and forehead

  • Use a buffing motion rather than a tug to blend your foundation and set it in place

  • For seamless coverage, stop your foundation right at the area where your jaw meets your neck
