GET YOUR CURL ON WITH AUNT JACKIE’S

Kiss frizzy, hard-to-tame hair good-bye, because we’ve got two words for you – Aunt Jackie’s – a hair care line for curly, coiled, or kinky-haired women everywhere. Their products are sulfate-free, paraben-free, and contain no mineral oil, petrolatum, or harsh additives. While their clever product names might put a smile on your face, don’t be fooled! Aunt Jackie’s products are chock full of the good stuff – natural oils, butters, moisturizers and conditioners from trusty mother earth – specially formulated to give you the mane of your dreams!

Natural hair is finally having its moment! Well, okay, maybe the moment started five years ago, where everywhere you looked, you saw women proudly letting their curls out, and saying no to their hairdryers and straighteners.

Today, natural hair is back, and it’s bigger, and more luscious than ever.

But for every Solange (yep, we’re talking about Beyonce’s sister) or actress Keri Russell rocking her do, there are hundreds of women all over the world who aren’t quite sure how to give their curls and coils the TLC they deserve.

That’s where we come in. We’ve teamed up with one of our favorite natural hair care brands – Aunt Jackie’s – to bring you a 7 step routine that will have you sporting your own natural curls for seven days without breakage or drying.

Think of this as the naturalista’s bible. The end all and be all of sage natural hair wisdom, passed down for generations (but mostly from Aunt Jackie’s stylists), all packaged and prepped, and ready for you.

Whether you’ve been wearing your curls for a long time or just thinking about getting started, a little extra product knowledge wouldn’t hurt anyone.

So say goodbye to limp, lackluster strands and hello to some of your best hair days ahead.

HERE’S YOUR SCHEDULE

hair

We recommend you begin the schedule on a weekend so that you can set aside a couple of hours to carry out the routine. Steps 1-3 may take some time, but trust us, the results are well worth it.

STEP ONE: WASH + CONDITION

hair

WASH

Great natural hair begins with the basics, and that means going back to the shower and changing up your washing routine. Ditch your regular drugstore shampoo and embrace the co-wash movement with Aunt Jackie’s sulfate and paraben-free Purify Me co-wash cleanser.

Women with straight or fine hair textures might be averse to the drying effects of shampoo, but it’s even worse if you’ve got coils and kinks! Co-washing is a relatively new practice that does wonders for curly haired naturalistas. It’s short for ‘conditioner washing,’ and requires that you skip the shampoo and wash your hair only with conditioner or a special ‘co-wash cleanser’.

Purify Me is rich in Omega Fatty Acids, Vitamin E, avocado, apple cider vinegar, coconut, and flaxseed, to help soften hair and retain its natural oils. Co-washing works best for coarse, dry hair.

Here’s how you use it:

  • Thoroughly wet hair, then work in a moderate amount of Co-wash Cleanser, gently massaging into your hair and scalp.
  • Do not lather vigorously
  • If you hair is prone to tangles, shampoo by gently starting at the roots and making your way to the ends, carefully working in the co-wash and detangling as you go
  • Rinse thoroughly, and then repeat to ensure that your hair and scalp are clean and that impurities have been rinsed away
  • For best results, gently remove excess water from your hair before conditioning

If you have loose or soft curls, we recommend using the Oh So Clean! moisturizing and softening shampoo instead. It’s light, smells like heaven, and is gentle enough for everyday use.

CONDITION

Once your hair is stripped of dirt and impurities, the next step is to deep condition. This allows you to repair and replenish brittle, dry hair, and bring some moisture back into moisture-resistant hair. We recommend the luscious Fix My Hair for 2c to 4c textures. Its nutrient-rich formula full of natural butters and oils helps soften and strengthen hair prone to frizzing and swelling, and is a great reparative treatment.

Here’s how you use it:

  • Apply generously to damp hair, fully coating every strand
  • Leave on for 5 minutes without a plastic cap, or 10 minutes with a plastic cap for deeper conditioning
  • Rinse thoroughly

If you have softer curls or wavy hair, follow the same steps using the In Control! anti-poof moisturising and softening conditioner instead. If your hair needs some extra love, add on a plastic cap and sit under a hooded dryer for 10 minutes before rinsing.

STEP TWO: BRING THE MOISTURE BACK

hair

LEAVE-IN CONDITIONER

Next, we’re going to give your hair a round of moisture with the help of Aunt Jackie’s Quench! leave in conditioner. It’s intensely hydrating, non-greasy, lightweight, and detangles to boot. Can we hear an Amen?

Made with Marshmallow Root, Shea Butter and Extra Virgin Olive Oil, this is the deep moisture therapy your parched tresses need.

Here’s how you use it:

  • Squeeze a generous dollop of Quench! into your hands, rub your palms together and apply evenly throughout your hair, concentrating on your problem areas
  • Gently comb through with a wide tooth comb, starting at the ends, and working up to the roots.
  • Do not force through tangles
  • Work through tangled areas by taking sections of your hair, applying some more conditioner, and gently combing the ends before making your way upward to the roots

STEP THREE: PRACTICE THE L.O.C. METHOD

hair

LEAVE-IN, OIL, CREAM METHOD

We have no idea who came up with it, but we need to give the creator of the L.O.C. method a medal! If there’s one thing you take away from this challenge, this is it –  The L.O.C. or liquid/leave-in, oil, condition method – aka the holy trinity of moisturizing.

It’s the secret to soft, infinitely touchable hair; a trifecta of products used in just the right order, to create an intensive moisture seal for drying, brittle strands. If you’re a seasoned naturalista, you might have your own version of this step (some people prefer doing the ‘L.C.O.’ method instead of ‘L.O.C.’) but if you’re a rookie, we suggest sticking to this model, at least until you get a hang of how your hair behaves.

STEP 1

Apply a generous amount of  moisturizing leave-in treatment to cleansed hair. We love the Aunt Jackie’s Knot On My Watch because it gently detangles while protecting your strand from breakage. If you’ve already conditioned your hair the day before, or if your mane is sufficiently moisturized, skip the leave-in and use plain old water instead. Use a spray bottle to lightly mist your whole head evenly.

STEP 2

Next, apply a thin layer of oil over your newly hydrated strands. The Aunt Jackie’s Soft All Over is a great multi-purpose oil that not only works on your hair, but also your body and nails. It has shea butter, coconut, ginseng, and grapeseed and jojoba oils, and smells like a slice of heaven. The oil seals in the water or conditioner on the inside, and acts as a barrier against harsh weather, temperature, and the sun.

STEP 3

The last step is to apply a touch of a butter-based, creamy moisturizer like Aunt Jackie’s Seal It Up from roots to tips. This dose of mega moisture-intensive sealing butter creates a protective barrier that locks in moisture, helps repair and prevent breakage, seals and prevents split ends, and adds definition to your curls. It also acts a basic styling cream, and limits chemical and natural damage caused by over-processing or protective styling.

STEP FOUR: PROTECT + STYLE

hair

With all that prep behind you, you’re finally ready to style! You can try the tuck and roll, bantu knot, top knot, cornrows/braids, or any combination of styles to protect the most fragile part of your hair – the ends – while still looking fierce.

The L.O.C method is the perfect pre-styling prep, so all you have to do is pick a style, and go wtih it. Make sure to wrap your tresses tonight (and every night after) in a silk scarf before bed. This will help your hair retain moisture, set your curls, and form a protective barrier against the drying or abrasive effects of your linen and nighttime tossing.

STEP FIVE: ROCK YOUR CURLS

hair

LET IT ALL OUT

Shake it out, because today you reap the benefits of your three hour-long weekend remedial hair bootcamp (seriously, how long did it take you?) Now that you’ve had your beauty sleep, carefully unravel your curls from their protective styles, and shape them curls with your fingers and hands. Add some oil or a hydrating spray if you need some last minute luster before you head out the door.

STEP SIX: REFRESH YOUR CURLS

hair

SPRAY ON MOISTURISERS

A mid-week moisture refresher, prep, and style is an easy way to grow and maintain your voluptuous curls for a week, without any signs of breakage. After work, just before bed, refresh your hair with a spritz of a hydrating milk or oil.

Use the Aunt Jackie’s Half & Half hydrating silken hair milk for an instant pick-me-up for your locks. Its super lightweight formula works on all hair types (1a to 4c), so keep this one at hand!

If your scalp feels dry or flaky, run a bit of E-Blast over it. The moisturizing spray will hydrate and replenish your scalp and roots, and nourish them in time for styling.

STEP SEVEN: EXTRA PREP + PROTECT

hair

MID-WEEK MOISTURE PREP

To really bump up the moisture, spend a few extra minutes re-styling your hair and re-setting your curls.

Start with hydrated curls (step 6), and use a styling cream like Curl La La or an elongating therapy like Don’t Shrink to provide your hair with body, bounce, and stretch. Apply, as needed throughout hair, then style as usual.

Tame unruly strays or a wiry hairline with a dab of Tame My Edges (on a toothbrush for even application) for a smooth, shiny finish. Enriched with Moroccan argan and grapeseed oil, this is great product if you have a thinning/ fragile hairline and want to help correct or protect it, or you’re sticking your hair under wig.

Don’t forget to wrap your hair in a silk scarf before bed, to really lock in the moisture and keep your mane tamed.

STEP EIGHT: CURL LA LA INDEED

hair

WHO LET THE CURLS OUT?

The next day, loosen your refreshed curls, adding volume and definition as you go, and you’re all set. Congratulations on making it through seven days of fabulous curls with just one intense prep session. Hallelujah!

Remember that this hair challenge is just a guide. Feel free to customize or adapt it to your hair texture and general care regime. You’re your own hair expert. If you hair doesn’t need as much moisture, skip a few of the hydrating steps. If you want to combine days, go on ahead!
