We get it. Instagram can be a time sinkhole when it comes to stalking (no, no!) we really mean staring endlessly at beautiful curated photos of everyone else’s perfect life. (Yeah, right). But your timeline can also be a major source of business inspiration, laden with #bossbabe success stories since there are so many women willing to take you behind the scenes for glimpses into how they’re hitting their targets and #lifegoals.
Through their feeds, we get an inside look into the incredible businesses they’ve built for themselves.
Sophia is still the ultimate #girlboss. She started the wildly successful online clothing brand, Nasty Gal, in 2014 and then documented her meteoric rise to the millionaire club in the best selling millennial manifesto, GirlBoss. No sooner had we put the book down, the internet exploded with the news that Sophia had declared bankruptcy. That kind of public humiliation may have thrown a less confident young woman into a tailspin but in true girl boss fashion, Sofia crafted her own heroine’s journey out of the experience.
She launched an all-female networking platform and this week her IG account reached over 1 million followers. Sophia’s feed is part high fashion, part badass lady boss (we all grow up, right) and part business advice while on the way to a new kind of superstardom.
We love her slices of wisdom even when they are sponsored. Just look at this piece of brilliance she wrote this past week:
“Let’s talk about MONEY. Something I’ve made a lot of, lost enough of, and saved too little of. Quick stat: did you know that only 38% of U.S. women invest their money in the markets and more than half of us say investing is not for “people like me?”
With insights and vulnerability like that, how could she not be at the top of our list?
Look beyond the Gucci belt and the Loubitons, Kela Walker is “BOOKED, BUSY AND BLESSED!” That’s her hashtag, not ours. Kela is a six-time nominated producer and TV host who takes us behind the scenes with an energy that is so constantly on, at times she leaves us all breathless just trying to keep up.
She goes from meetings to parties to producing to editing in 24 hours and she rolls it all out for us with quips, quotes, meaningful conversation and if we’re lucky, video. Kela lives her best life with clear intention and has a work ethic to be admired and emulated. We applaud when she shares her experiences not just working in media but also about faith, wellness and style.
3 years ago our friend Malene introduced us to Rosemary, “Follow her,” she said, she gives substantive and cool tips about growing your IG account.” At the time Malene could have been selling us snow cone, the fact that she recommended Rosemary as an Instagram guru was all we needed to know. 3 years later, we are glued to the morsels of IG wisdom this mama of 6 dishes out about using your Instagram account to grow your business and build a life that you love.
Her IG account is filled with nuggets about growing your business in a digital space but also she sprinkles it with notes of her home renovation and family. She is a superb photographer and designer so her account is quite a visual feast but there are also her Monday conversations on Facebook and her subscription photography service where you can buy her beautifully designed templates at a package deal (we are big fans of this). Additionally, she offers some wonderful digital media courses that make her star power glow brighter than the rest.
Can we all worship at the altar of Paola. She is the ultimate curator and creator whose shot to fame wasn’t because of luck or good fortune but rather because of her bold approach to life, her wildly colourful aesthetic and her ability to tell stories like no other #bossbabe we know. We’ve been following her story when her hair was shoulder length (insider joke) and watched her launch a head wrap company, a lifestyle brand, and seen her featured in some of the world’s top publications and partner with leading brands as an influencer, though she does to always embrace that term.
She is now a mother and a wife and those roles have only added to her fierce approach to living life on terms she has set and negotiated. Her IG feed offers a beautiful visual approach to defining black and beautiful, Haitian/Caribbean culture and female entrepreneurship and her brand is refreshing, thoughtful and lawddd, can we talk about the way she uses colour in her style! What we love most? She teaches us all that non-conformity has a place in the language of success, particularly if you live life as a creative.
“Who runs the world?” Beyoncé asked, and we screamed back, “Girls!” But maybe, just maybe, we should have shouted Emily Weiss. She’s the fashion assistant, tuned stylist turned multi million dollar beauty mogul who raised $10.4 million in funding and launched her own beauty range, Glossier in 2014. She has not looked back since.
Glossier has turned into a “direct-to-consumer beauty company that leverages content and community to power a superior shopping experience” and it leaves major companies like Lancôme and others wondering, what just happened? If you’re into beauty and wanting to know how to build a brand Emily is the one to follow. Her Instagram feed shows persistence and charm, and of course, it’s all about the monied life but hey, we’re not knocking the very thing we follow these #bossbabes for.
