5 Wellness Trends To Prioritise In 2021

Who’s with me in not wanting to look in the rearview mirror as we welcome this spanking new year? Never could we have imagined that the past 10 months we would have been forced to live largely inside while getting intimate with socially distanced love. Still, in all hand-sanitising, temperature monitoring and mask-wearing, we learned something. We learned in a global pandemic seeking wellness (both mental and physical)  was the chief way we could prioritise self-care, and let’s face it, stay sane in the crazy year that was 2020!

“In 2021 though with all the practice we’ve had, wellness is set to rule the roost! “

So, as we close this chapter on a year most of us would rather forget, and open a new book, here are 5 Wellness Trends along with my top product recommendations (from drinking more tea, to reshaping your morning routine and downloading mental wellness apps) you should prioritize in the new year ahead.

The New Wellness Trend: Drink More Tea In 2021

Have you ever had a day when your Zoom call went on and on even as you were monitoring your child’s online work in class? Oh yes, and handing in your overdue report made it the 5th day in a row you didn’t work out!

If you’ve had days like these where you’re juggling work duties and parenting responsibilities all in the same space 24 hours a day then you know there is nothing like a good cup of tea to ease the tension and give you a moment to be gentle with yourself.

Tea drinking brings comfort and pleasure. In a year of so much stress, it’s exactly what was needed.

Of course, you don’t have to say no to a good cup of java. However, in 2021 the year of self-care, preparing and cradling a cup tea can help you start the day right, end it peacefully, and cope with all the micro stressors in between.

My Recommendation For The Best Teas

If I am not pouring hot water directly from my kettle into a cup of fresh rosemary then I’m reaching for one of my Clipper Tea boxes that I have stacked in my kitchen cupboard.

Clipper Tea contains a wide blend of various leaves, roots, flowers, and barks that are all pesticide-free, unbleached tea bags and grown organically.

You can enjoy a daily wellness core of green rooibos, fennel root, nettle, chamomile, lemon (depending on which flavour you choose). An added plus is that all these ingredients are touted for their ancient health benefits. If these flavours don’t hold water for you then the more traditional, organic Clipper English Breakfast Tea and Indian Chai Black and Green Teas are equally amazing.

Tea Is Not Just For Stress And  Managing Wellness

The big challenges of the pandemic created huge interest in minimising stress and anxiety through what we put in our bodies. Tea drinking is one way to recharge during the day when it feels like you’ve had enough, or when you want a moment to yourself. There are other benefits though to drinking a wide variety of organic teas, that include:

Changing Your Morning Routine Can Lead To A Wellness Makeover

Ok, so we talked about the benefits of tea. The act of choosing the Clipper Tea flavour you want, warming the water, and letting the tea bag steep means you have to be present at the moment as you brew.

This brings us to the second wellness trend in 2021.  The need to be present as you wake up and reach for your journal or prayer book instead of scrolling mindlessly through your phone. There is an art to taking time to develop a morning routine that is grounded in deliberate thought, good intention, and even better nutritional choices.

Redefining Your Morning Ritual

Redefining a morning routine is one of the biggest wellness trends in 2021. Mind you, it’s not new (Google the words and you’ll find millions of influencers sharing how they begin their day). However, redefining the ritual is important because the pandemic turned us into homebodies. With so many of us working from home the way we start our mornings may be in need of a reboot.

My Recommendation For Good Morning Routine Includes Eating Grain

My morning routine includes three things: meditation, taking care of my dogs and eating something healthy. Now I get that the whole intermittent fasting trend is big, but I need something nutritious in by stomach by 8:00 a.m.

My go-to breakfast is a cup of cereal with oat milk but not just any cereal. I’m partial to McCallum’s All Inklusive range of healthy cereals, which I only added to my wellness regime since the pandemic began. Now before you start with: Whoa, Judette doesn’t cereal have a lot of sugar? I’d tell you at once, No, not this range!

One of my favourite cereals from the brand is their Multigrain with Cranberries. It contains 6 grams of sugar for every 30 grams of cereal. That’s pretty good, plus in every serving, there are all sorts of extra nutritional goodness: chia seeds, quinoa and oats. Oh, and all the cereals are cholesterol-free and fibre full.

Once I don’t add spoons of sugar or overly sweet fruit to my bowl of All Inklusive cereal, it’s actually an energizing, nutritious way for me to be mindful of how I start my day, after I meditate

Wellness experts say that when carving out a morning routine you should focus on healthy habits that provide energy, feel good sentiments and mental clarity. Your routine should be enough to sustain you throughout a demanding day. So here’s to doing your best work and living your best life as well, just because you have reshaped your morning ritual.

The Weighted Blanket Adds Comfort And Aids With Better Sleep

Weighted blankets may be an ancient health remedy but its modern moment arrived in 2020 and is set to become even more popular in 2021. Actually, you would have to be living under a rock not to notice every fitness, wellness, lifestyle blog touting its magic.

So, what’s a weighted blanket? Firstly, they are simply blankets that weigh between 5-30 pounds. Secondly, the extra weight mimics a therapeutic technique called deep pressure stimulation. Think of it simply as a sensory experience similar to a comforting hug. Thirdly they have been proven help to lessen anxiety, improve mood and sleep.

My Recommendation For Good, Inexpensive Weighted Blanket

When I first began researching wellness blankets to decide if it could help quell my toss and turn nights, I thought there was no way I could sleep with one around me.  Just the name alone made me feel as if I would drown in a pool of sweat.

That is until I discovered that there are a bunch of cooling wellness blankets on the market. Prices are can go up to $300 but this one works just right for me and can be purchased on Amazon.

Your Anxiety Ridden Nights Can End

If there is anything that 2020 has taught us is that we need to facilitate comfort and happiness in our lives. We know now what it’s like to fill our own wellness cup with the help of commodities, and community.  If you’re lying awake wondering if 2021 is going to be a repeat of last year, and not sleeping well.  snagging a weighted blanket could be the one 2021 wellness trend you need and deserve

WELLNESS 2021

Getting Familiar With Wellness Apps Will Be Popular This Year

There is an app for literally everything you need. From the time the pandemic began mental health experts have been outspoken about its potential for triggering mental disturbances. So you’d expect mental wellness apps to be in abundance. The good news is they are.

Now first things first, these apps I’m recommending are not for clinical diagnoses for anxiety, depression, bipolar disease etc. These do exist but think of the ones I’m pointing out below as motivational guides for when you need a pep in your step or to feel more encouraged about your purpose. Something we could all use a bit of in 2021.

 My Recommendations

I have 3 apps on my phone that help me stay mentally well and less anxious about the thing I have no control over. Oh, they are all free.

Benefits of Wellness Apps

Let’s just say Mental Wellness time has come and, in a way, we can see this as a positive outcome from a difficult year. Telehealth, online counselling and therapy dial-ups are all part of the digital explosion that is fueling better mental health awareness.

We all know the huge shame game society can play with those undergoing mental challenges.

“Wellness apps remove shame, make it ok to talk about how we feel and share our feeling with others.”

WELLNESS 2021

Healthy Snacking Adds To A Feeling Of Wellness

After the year where we all perfected homemade banana bread and even doubles in our kitchens, we know that food has played a crucial role in how we survived the disruptions in 2020.

With most of us now trying to lose the pandemic weight at home, we have come to realise that restrictive dieting is out in 2021 but so too is eating everything from the fridge. What’s in though is conscious snacking and a better approach to eating that serves our physical and emotional selves.

2021 brings the focus on smart food choices like never before.  In the final analysis, it’s all about listening to our bodies and giving it the nutrition it deserves to function. This includes making wise choices, staying hydrated, keeping veggies handy, eating on time, selecting healthy ingredients and stocking up on healthy snacks like a nutritious cracker or a crunchy rye bread.

I know. I know. Crackers and flatbreads tend to get a bad rap for being loaded with carbs and overly-processed ingredients but if you get a great one thankfully, none of those things rings true.

My Recommendation For The Best Healthy Cracker

If I had to update this video I made about healthy snacking I’d place Ryvita Multigrain Rye bread at the top of the list. Essentially the Ryvita is like the offspring of a cracker and a flatbread, making it a great canvas for a healthy snack.

They’re packed with a variety of wholesome, fibre-rich grains, like rye, oats and are rich magnesium, zinc, iron and offer a good source of protein. To me, the Ryvita crackers are like health bombs but in a delicious sort of way.

I top them as I would my toast—try with avocado, hummus, cheese, or yoghurt dip. They work well with soup too. Oh, one more thing, Ryvita also has a Fruit Crunch cracker that’s lightly sweetened flatbread stacked with currants, seed and oats that tastes extraordinary even on its own.

YOU MATTER THE MOST IN 2021

It took a global pandemic to remind us of what matters most. We saw it on TV screens.  The world was saying yes to racial justice, yes to economic parity and yes to trusting data and science.

But we did not need CNN to remind us that we matter. You and I, we matter. What we do with our health – how we take care of our minds and bodies, and how we prioritize what we eat and drink as well as how we live socially distanced with each other is what is needed to build resilience and courage over the next 12 months.

Happy New Year
Everyone!
