Getting Fit! It’s the number 1 resolution on most of our lists at the start of the New Year. It also becomes the most abandoned intention by the time February rolls around. The list of reasons why it’s so easy to fall off the exercise bandwagon is long: expensive gym memberships, the hassle of getting there and let’s face it, laziness, are chief among them.
But what if we told you that you can back into shape, shed pounds, and never see the inside of a gym. That’s right. We said no gym!
We’ve put together a list of 5 videos from YouTube land that you can consider your foolproof fitness friends during the first month of 2017. These range from the fun, to the challenging, to the: “You want me to do what?!!!” videos. We have recommended a variety of workouts for every fitness level and yes, we have tried them all ourselves!
The other good news is that all these videos are part of the presenter’s own fitness channels so come February, when you’re done with our five favourites, you can still sweat, slim down, and shape up just as good as any person at the gym, but with a fresh set of workouts. No boredom allowed!
Tracy Anderson is a huge proponent of reengineering your muscular structure by working the small muscle groups intensely. This particular workout comprises just over 50 minutes of deep stretches and moves. You will never jump around or do intense cardio but you will feel the burn by working muscles you never even knew existed. Tracy focuses on high repetition and low resistance.
Highlights: We love her choice of house music plus her 7-minute arm workout is like nothing you’ve ever done before. We promise. Done without any weights, this burn is intense, fierce, and oh so good!
Intensity: Moderate to Difficult.
Bipasha Basu is a gorgeous Bollywood mega star, and if you can drag your eyes away from her insanely good looks you’ll notice that she also has a body that is sculpted, fit and envy-worthy. During her workouts Basu says that exercise is an investment that not only helps her look good and stay healthy, but also improves her efficiency. Yes, we can tell! We’re giving our thumbs up this dance video because it’s only 30 minutes long, easy to do, has some tough plyometrics but is not impossibly hard on your knees. The wardrobe colour saturation in this video is over the top but we love that too.
Highlights: Basu’s sultry voice is very reassuring and will help get you through her workout especially if you are only just restarting. The Bollywood dance jam at the end will get your hips moving and is pure breakout fun. This workout can be coupled with one of her weight based training sessions (also 30 minutes long) for 1 hour of feel good moves that will help to improve muscle coordination and strengthen your bones.
Intensity: Easy to Moderate
If you ever wanted a best girlfriend to greet you each day after work, on your computer screen, Cassey Ho would be it. Fun, full of personality and always welcoming, Cassey is an award-winning fitness instructor, entrepreneur and personality who became the queen of fitness You Tube land with her self created Blogilates workouts. In this video, Cassey fuses pop music together with her classical Pilates routine for a 12 minute workout that tones your arms, back, legs and abs. I know what you’re thinking. “You can’t do that in 12 minutes!” But Cassey has found the way, and at the end of it all, you’ll dripping sweat. This is a routine that is very short on time and yet super effective. It will remain your go to regimen when work and life gets crazy busy.
Highlights: Cassey’s name should mean joy in the English dictionary. Her workouts are infectiously inspiring and she has such an amazing personality, no matter how tired you are, her routines are electric. You can combine her sessions that target specific areas and make your workouts as long or as short as you want. This specific workout is good way to put the downward dog to good aerobic use.
This workout is a killer, like killer everything. Let us count the ways. Killer cardio? Check. Killer sculpting? Check. Killer compound moves? Check. Killer calorie burn? Check. Jeanette Jenkins, is a trainer to the stars: P!nk, Alicia Keys, Amber Rose,Tracee Ellis Ross, Serena Williams, Shonda Rhimes, among others. This workout offers a no-frills, high intensity, kick ass workout that burns 500 calories in one 45-minute shot. You’ll sweat. You’ll think: “What the heck?” You’ll have several glasses of water and you’ll stop. But if you stick to it, at least three times a week, we promise you results to be proud of. Oh! One more thing, Ms. Jenkins is among the most qualified of trainers. She is a graduate of the Institute of Integrative Nutrition recognized by the American Association of Drugless Practitioners and Columbia University.
Highlights: We love that this workout has no weights and that it offers a low intensity version via one of the fitness instructors in the video. The cardio kickboxing section is everything a difficult workout should be and for good measure Ms. Jenkins throws in power moves, like burpees and starfish jumps, increasing your heart rate at a level that will feel like a spinning disco ball.

The instructions are easy to follow and the focus here is on the heart of weight loss – cardio.
