Nail This Mixed Print Trend For An Easy Wardrobe Update

There are some fashion trends that even the most stylish among us have trouble mastering with total confidence; take socks with high heels or candy-coloured hair, for example.  We like it when we see it on someone else but can never imagine wearing the trend ourselves.
But, there’s one fashion trend that is so appealing, I hope it stays around for a while. The print-on-print-on-(sometimes)-print trend, which combines two or more patterns with exuberance and hints of je ne sais quoi is a look I love. Thing is, once you have some guidelines pulling off this seemingly tricky look, everything else is totally  “figureoutable”. All you need are a few tips — and a lot of attitude — and you’ll be mixing and matching the best prints: florals, stripes, ginghams, polka dots in no time.
Ahead, I’m breaking down the ways I decided to combine my African print jacket, with a gingham checkered pants. So whether you’re just testing the waters or you’re ready to dive into a head-to-toe commitment, there is going to be a tip or two here you can take and reinterpret for yourself. And, because no look is complete without stellar accessories, I’m including finishing touches that totally make the outfit, a woven basket, some bright flowers and a whole lot of attitude
With this ensemble, my African inspired jacket was clearly the hero. Fashion maker, Meiling, designed this statement piece for my trip to South Africa last year, and I knew I wanted to pair it with trousers that shared at least one of the jacket’s colours. We picked orange and then made sure the secondary piece, the pants, picked up some of the shapes that were in the jacket. To add more cohesiveness the jacket was lined in gingham along with the front ties which prevented the outfit from looking entirely busy.
Because mixing prints also means playing around with different textures and shapes, my jacket provides an interesting contrast to the pants with the flared hemline of the jacket juxtaposed to the straight cut of the pants.
One huge tip, a streamlined silhouette will always rein in the print and allow you to shine, rather than drown in the print. In this look, the hemline gets tapered with some elegant heels. I chose a pair of neutral pumps by Kahume which sobers up the look.
An outfit like this does not demand bold accessories. Why compete? While it might seem natural to reach for a ton of accessories, I think an unexpected accent in like a woven bag plays up the quirkiness of the bold, graphic prints in the outfit.
You may think picking one print to wear head to toe and calling it a day is the easiest way to do pattern. That can be overwhelming and severe and certainly not too much fun.  In reality, learning how to mix your prints takes guts, creativity and bits of know-how about shape and proportion. But, since the latter is easy to conquer nailing the style is all about you. The main thing to remember is to always opt for tailored pieces and have fun.
