Could working from your home office be a thing of the past? Let me explain what I mean.
When I was last in NYC, which seems like eons ago, but in fact was just in the latter part of 2018, Amazon had just opened its flagship bookstore in Columbus Circle. It was part hipster, part mainstream, stacked with good coffee and even better books.
It was a bibliophile’s heaven.
Now, in the same city, guess what? Amazon is expanding again but not just with a product-based store. There are confirmed reports that Jeff Bezos grabbed up this space in Midtown Manhattan for a cool billion, and is set to add a whopping 2,000 employees to that space, alone.
But Bezos is not riding solo. Every major tech company from Google to Apple, from Netflix to Facebook has increased its physical footprints in major cities.
So here’s the deal. More office space with more desks and more employees in major cities provide the key to the question I asked right at the top: “Is the home office a permanent thing?”
You really don’t have to be a rocket scientist to see the trend.
The Future of Work Is A Mash-Up
Tech companies are envisioning a world where the future of work is a mash-up between home and office. The ideal is where remote work remains a thing of the present but they also envision a space where socially distanced meeting rooms and workstations offer an opportunity for humans to feel connected other than through the computer screen.
The Home Office Is Here To Stay
I’m all for the hybrid model with future face-to-face meetings, fully masked and with a Pfizer shot in the arm but don’t go packing up your home office yet. In fact, get ready to make it more comfortable and functional.
Like what Amazon did with its cool décor, your home office should be comfortable enough to allow for productivity but also enjoyment. It is where after all, you will spend several hours per day living at work. Oops, I mean working from home.
Here Are The 5 Things I Own To Make My Home Office Stylish and Productive
1. A Good Looking Desk
Now that you know the virus is not going anywhere, at least for the next year, the idea of working from your dining table on the tall, upright bad-for-the-back dining chair does not look as attractive as it first did. Reality bites with the first backache so my recommendation is always to have a good desk and chair.
I’ll leave the chair for another post but my choice in desk is usually sleek and minimalistic. Because my studio is small and has a bulky love seat, which I will never get rid of, a sleek desk is perfect for me. Mine was bought here but you can get a lot of amazing options like this one which makes for quite a chic impact.
A good looking functional desk is important. Here’s why! The first thing is we spend so many hours at it, working pretty and productively is an unbeatable combo. The second is that it presents an opportunity to create a workspace away from your living space, even when the desk is moved and tucked in a corner behind a plant.
Finally, big tech should not be the only ones capable of marrying design with function, small businesses can have a great style /function impact too.
If you follow me at all you know I’d say this… plants make any room look more lush and beautiful. It warms up any space but in an office, it reeks of cozy without being kitsch.
When I’m on IG, my favorite spaces often have plants in them and even though I live in a green space there is another reason I love plants in the office. They’re proven to increase productivity. This decade-long study says plants offer a 15% boost in productivity.
If you love the look of plants but your green thumb needs work, make sure that you choose plants for the office that are low maintenance and easy to take care of. In my home office, I have several green beauties on my coffee table, my desk and even in these cute plant hangers, I found on Amazon.
Cozy, productivity, and impact? 100%
I teach professionals all over the world at the Jolt Academy. I also do at least 4 Live video recordings per week. Nothing irritates me more than when I can’t hear people clearly or if the background noise gets to be too much or the audio is unforgiving
In each Live, I have a best friend that is usually hidden from the camera lens. It’s my YETI pro microphone which I bought three years ago on Amazon. . Today, it continues to be one of the best on the market in terms of functionality and attractiveness.
4. Cute Organisers
The things you surround yourself with dictate whether you enjoy spending time in your home office or not.
I no longer use a printer but I still get mail and I like an organizing system that allows me to store things until my accountant and assistant come in to take care of the details
These black storage bins for the wall fit the bill for me. They are practical, easy on the eye, and can be spray-painted in any colour. The chalk and boards allow me to switch up what I place in each of them. Versatility is another reason I love them.
5. A Lovely Sideboard
The reason why I want to spray paint my organizers gold is because of this masterpiece. This sideboard/credenza/console was once turquoise blue but spray painted in gold for a more lux effect.
It’s the catch-all for my important documents, Wi-Fi equipment, chords, photographs. masks, files, and other miscellaneous items. It is also the piece that gets asked about the most.
Function does not need to look boring and since your home office is central to all you do to eke out a living, you might as well make it unique and personal to your tastes.
